Preparing For Your Senior Session

If you're reading this, you’ve already booked your senior session or you’re researching everything you need to know and prepare for. Either way, good for you! South Atlanta Photography is just as excited as you are to capture this awesome milestone. Preparing for your senior session is key to ensuring everything goes smoothly and you look and feel your very best in front of the camera. Below are some essential tips to get you ready for your big shoot day.

First things first, let's talk about your wardrobe. Choosing the right outfit is crucial. We have written a whole blog post on how to prepare your wardrobe choices. You may find that post here. As an overview though, think about what makes you feel confident and showcases your personality. Go for colors that highlight your skin tone and your eyes. Soft pastels, earthy tones, and classic neutrals are always a great place to start. To avoid any unsightly bulges, plan to empty your pockets – instead, bring a small bag or purse for your essentials. Accessorize thoughtfully. Simple pieces, like a watch or hat for boys and a bracelet or belt for girls, will add a touch of flair without distracting too much from you.

Another important thing to keep in mind: stay out of the sun and avoid tanning for at least 48 hours before your shoot. I understand the inclination to want to be tan for your photos. However, sunburns and uneven tans can be tricky to work with and might make you feel less confident.

Let’s also talk about self care to help you look and feel your best. Getting good rest in the days leading up to your session is vital. A well-rested face looks fresh and vibrant, and you'll have more energy to enjoy the shoot. On the day of your session, make sure to eat a light meal and stay hydrated. Trust me, feeling good physically will dramatically enhance your enjoyment of this experience. It’s tough to have fun and relax when you’re hungry or dehydrated. If this sounds like something you struggle with, we have no problem with you bringing snacks and drinks to ensure your energy levels stay up so your personality can shine through in every shot.

Now, let's talk about some creative prep. Take a look at the mood boards provided with your session package, or feel free to create your own. These can be incredibly helpful in visualizing the vibe and style you want for your photos. Additionally, spend some time practicing posing and smiling in front of a mirror. Get comfortable with how you move and what angles you like best. You can also watch a few posing tutorials to pick up some tips and tricks. This little bit of practice can make a huge difference in how natural and relaxed you’ll look in your photos. We give this same advice to the person having their photo taken for the first time, as well as the veteran model working on a national campaign. There’s no reason to be embarrassed.

With that said, trust the process and have fun! Your senior session is a celebration of you and all you’ve accomplished. With the right preparation, you'll be ready to shine, and we'll capture stunning images that you and your family will treasure for years to come.
